COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Green Bay welcomes 3,200 youth bowlers from across the country for the Junior Gold Championships—held for the first time in our backyard—and eight local bowling centers will host the week-long event that began on July 11 and will finish Saturday with nearly $500,000 in scholarship prizes.  FOX 11

CRIME NEWS

  • James VanderLeest, 21, was charged with first-degree reckless homicide after two-year-old Leo Escalante died on June 22 on Green Bay’s east side — police say his injuries did not match a fall down the stairs, a hearing is set for Aug 14, and his father was also arrested.  FOX 11
  • Former bank official Amy Reid was convicted of bank fraud for using p-cards to charge about $412,000 in personal expenses and will be sentenced Oct. 16—she faces up to 30 years in prison, a $1 million fine, and $411,923 in restitution.  WTAQ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Green Bay’s NFL Draft in April boosted Brown County’s economy with a $79.9M impact and generated $104.7M statewide as about 600,000 people attended the three-day event—far exceeding original projections, though some local businesses noted lower than expected post-event traffic.  WNCY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local legislators in Green Bay introduced a bill to restore $1.9 million to the Veteran Housing and Recovery Program—funding that will keep a Bellevue facility from closing by the end of September. Senator Jamie Wall, Representative Ryan Spaude, and Representative Amaad Rivera-Wagner back the move to secure housing for veterans in need.  WBAY
