EDUCATION NEWS

  • Green Bay School Board vetoed a proposal to pilot weapons detectors in high schools on Dec. 22 (citing unresolved issues on cost and effectiveness). Board President James Lyerly said the board will continue evaluating other safety measures.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
  • After a staff member reported suspicious sounds, four West De Pere schools went into a secure lockdown on Monday around 12:15 p.m. — police later cleared the area and classes resumed normally.  NBC 26

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Green Bay City Council approved the Kosmoski family's 168-acre Red Smith subdivision and a rezoning plan for the historic Day Street Mill property to support downtown and industrial development under new zoning laws. The deals mark a major step in the city's long-term growth plan.  Green Bay Press-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • State agriculture officials and USDA confirmed a new wildlife spillover of the H5N1 virus in a Dodge County dairy herd earlier this month — the first detection in Wisconsin dairy herds. They plan to resume full testing of farms soon and say pasteurized milk is safe to consume.  Green Bay Press-Gazette

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Anglers have fished on Shawano Lake's eastern end in drizzly conditions, with reports of about 10 inches of ice and hopes of catching panfish (or walleye) soon. The lake has been freezing for weeks and offers a seasonal escape for local ice fishing enthusiasts.  FOX 11
  • AAA predicts record travel numbers with 2.4 million Wisconsinites planning holiday trips during the busy season. Travelers are advised to pack emergency kits and plan departures accordingly — either leaving before 1 p.m. or after 7 p.m. to avoid peak traffic.  WBAY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Green Bay hosted one of its biggest NFL drafts from April 24 to 26 when over 600,000 visitors passed through the gates, generating a $72.9 million boost for Brown County (with a statewide impact of $104.7 million) and far surpassing pre-event projections after a year of planning.  FOX 11
