COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Suamico Fire Department has acquired a new ice rescue sled that cuts over two minutes off emergency responses on icy water. Sportsmen clubs helped fund the $6,000 sled after last December’s delay, and plans are underway to equip the lower bay with similar gear.  FOX 11
  • Green Bay is buzzing with holiday events this weekend. Join Holiday Fest at NEW Zoo and Adventure Park on Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and watch UWGB women's basketball at the Kress Events Center on Dec. 7 at 11:30 a.m.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
  • Green Bay Metro Fire Department is hosting its Gifts for Teens donation drive that accepts new, unwrapped gifts at all fire stations until Dec. 12. The department is also planning parades on Dec. 8, 9, 10 and 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.—each starting at a different neighborhood spot.  FOX 11
  • Emergency shelters in Northeast Wisconsin are facing higher demand amid dangerously cold temperatures; St. John's Ministries in Green Bay is hosting an average of 134 guests nightly (capacity 210) and SAM 25 in Shawano has extended its schedule to welcome 13-15 guests, including families, each night.  94.3 Jack FM
  • Warming shelters in Green Bay, including Freedom House and House of Hope, are open with extended hours to help neighbors facing cold weather + a lack of housing. Residents should call ahead to check availability as some shelters maintain wait lists.  NBC 26
  • St. John's Ministries will hold a Poverty Simulation on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 12 p.m. at the Men’s Shelter at 411 St. John Street to help participants experience the challenges of low-income life and build empathy.  WBAY

  • Fincantieri Marinette Marine laid off 93 white-collar workers (mostly engineers) after the Navy cut four frigate orders, forcing the company to rebalance its workforce. The shipyard said no details on future Navy projects have been finalized.  NBC 26

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin DNR is seeking public input to revise its 2015 Turkey Management Plan, which will guide turkey management for the next 10 years. A committee of tribal, hunting, and conservation representatives (among others) is reviewing feedback to shape the new plan.  Green Bay News Network
  • The City of Green Bay launched an enhanced online pet licensing tool this week, allowing residents to apply for and renew pet licenses online. The digital platform (which meets state law requirements) verifies vaccination records, offers 24/7 access and secure payments, with in-person or mail options still available.  Green Bay News Network
  • Brown County nonprofits risk losing over $3.4 million in federal funds for permanent housing if they cannot meet HUD’s new guidelines converting applications to transitional housing by Dec. 14.   • Firefighters in northeast Wisconsin warn residents of rising emergencies from carbon monoxide, furnace malfunctions, and frostbite as extreme cold settles in. They urge homeowners to clear furnace vents, maintain safe distances for space heaters, and check detectors to reduce risks.  NBC 26
