Good morning, Green Bay. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 26th of November.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • De Pere High School students prepared 24 Thanksgiving dinners for local families in need using ingredients funded by an anonymous donor—costing about $2,000. Families picked up the meals Tuesday morning while teachers said the project taught important life skills.  WBAY
  • The Green Bay School District is discussing a new safety policy that would require students to store their backpacks in lockers instead of using clear backpacks, a rule first put in place after a student brought a gun to Preble High School. Some board members support the change for added security while others worry it limits access to personal items — and the proposal remains tabled for a later date.  WBAY
  • Former Green Bay East principal Lori Frerk said the district did not address concerns about football coach Niko Sila’s job performance raised two years ago, which may have prevented his firing. FOX 11 News at Nine later today will feature an interview with Sila — more details may follow.  FOX 11
  • Ashwaubenon high school welding students from Jonathan Butler's Manufacturing/Welding class built giant custom steel snowflakes for the NEW Zoo holiday display using donated metal and hands-on skills. They completed the multi-week project and shipped the pieces Tuesday — showing their teamwork and precision in fabrication.  FOX 11
  • Students and community members can register for a virtual course on the greatest offensive players in Green Bay Packers history offered by UW-Green Bay—taught by Packers Hall of Fame curator Brent Hensel in nine sessions on Wednesdays from 1-2:30 p.m. from January 7th to March 4th, 2026 at a cost of $119.  FOX 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Navy said November 25 it will cancel four of the six frigate warships built in Wisconsin—keeping only the two already under construction—to speed up the build of new ship classes. Navy Secretary John Phelan said critics fear the change may hurt local shipyard jobs.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
  • The DNR reported that during the gun deer season opening weekend, hunters registered 90,671 deer and sold 777,843 hunting licenses, a figure almost unchanged from last year. The agency also confirmed two firearm-related incidents on opening day, with a man injured in Grant County & a hunter fatally injured in Fond du Lac County, and reminded hunters to follow safety rules and donate harvested deer.  NBC 26
  • The Green Bay Metro Fire Department will launch its holiday wreath campaign to raise fire safety awareness for Thanksgiving and Christmas starting Thursday and continuing until Jan. 1. For every residential fire in Green Bay, one green bulb on the wreath will change to red—officials said the season usually sees about seven fires from careless cooking.  94.3 Jack FM
