COMMUNITY NEWS

  • De Pere debuts Celebrate Flocktoberfest today at Legion Park as the Pink Flamingos and Celebrate De Pere join forces to raise funds for Hands Across De Pere, which helps local families. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. + charges $5 admission and features live music, food, and beer.  WBAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The NEW Zoo & Adventure Park is celebrating Halloween with Zoo Boo all month by inviting adults and kids to dress in costumes and collect candy at activity stations, including a returning Skeleton Safari game. The event runs on Fridays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. (tickets start at $15 with kids under three free).  WBAY
  • After a month in dry dock at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay — the repair site — the USS Cobia is set to leave at 7 a.m. Wednesday and will reach Manitowoc around 3 p.m. — museum officials will serve refreshments at the Sub Pub before announcing the public reopening date.  FOX 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chris Glinski, an industrial tech teacher at West De Pere High School, was one of 25 national winners of the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence and received a $15,000 award while his school got $35,000 to boost its trades program—offering UW credit opportunities. Glinski, who has taught for over two decades, helped his students score an average of three points higher on the ACT than their peers.  WBAY
  • NWTC has joined Year 7 of the Metallica Scholars Initiative which provides a $25,000 grant to offer 20 eligible students scholarships of up to $1,000 — it is aimed at helping students gain degrees in high-wage fields (such as health care, IT, and manufacturing).  FOX 11
  • Green Bay school board will discuss a policy that restricts backpack use during school hours by requiring middle and high school students to store them in lockers or designated areas—this follows a loaded gun found in a backpack at Preble High. The board meets Monday at 5 p.m. in room 331 and will also review a new high school schedule proposal along with a budget featuring a tax rate decrease and a $3.6 million deficit.  FOX 11

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Green Bay Packers hosted a flag football tournament on Friday as part of their Salute to Service program—military teams played round robin games near Lambeau Field. The event, now in its eighth year, awarded $2,500 to the winning team's morale fund, $1,500 to the runner up and $500 to each other team, funded by an NFL grant.  WBAY
