  • On July 21, an electrical fire destroyed the home and business of Cindy and Wally Hacker, leaving their artisan family with two young children and rescued pets temporarily homeless as they moved from staying with relatives to a hotel + they are seeking a long-term rental and community support while current orders may be delayed + assistance is needed for pet care.  WeAreGreenBay.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Green Bay authorities charged 48-year-old David VanderLeest with obstructing an officer and aiding a felon after 2-year-old Leo Escalante died on June 22 (bond cut from $100,000 to $50,000 cash) and his 21-year-old son faces reckless homicide charges (he will return to court on Aug. 14).  FOX 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UW-Green Bay has launched a new Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering to help local businesses meet the growing need for AI and modern computing skills. The program—designed with guidance from local tech leaders—offers hands-on training as applications are now open.  UW-Green Bay
  • UW-Green Bay announced Tuesday that it will add a software engineering major to meet a growing need for skilled local workers in fields such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and logistics. The program was designed with help from local industry leaders—ensuring graduates gain strong skills in both traditional software engineering and modern AI applications—and applications are now being accepted.  WTAQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials celebrated the start of the South Broadway redevelopment Tuesday as demolition cleared the former Badger Sheet Metal site to make way for a new fire station, 93 affordable housing units and retail space. The project—partly funded by Brown County’s American Rescue Plan dollars and a $1 million EPA Brownfield Cleanup grant—will add a modern three-story station with six drive-through bays and plans to connect downtown to Lambeau Field, with construction beginning later this year.  WBAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mark DeCleene from De Pere drives cancer patients to appointments with the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program to honor his father's memory after his loss to cancer. He has been volunteering since 2015 and drove over 1,000 miles in 2024—supporting the Sinclair Cares campaign.  FOX 11

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The village of Howard approved phase one of the Grid-Iron District apartment complex on the former United Health Group site, which will feature two four-story buildings with a parking garage and 102 studio, 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom units.
