COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Ashwaubomay Lake, a new beach wheelchair now lets people of all abilities move on the sand and enter the water. It was installed on June 5 with grant funds from Options for Independent Living and support from the Lions Club (aquatic coordinator Melody Escoto said the chair may require reservations if demand increases).  WTAQ
  • A new beach wheelchair was added to Ashwaubomay Lake on June 5 to help people using wheelchairs get on the sand and into the water. The chair was partly funded by a grant from Options for Independent Living and the Ashwaubenon Lions Club—lifeguards and staff will assist users as needed.  94.3 Jack FM
  • Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe locations gave out a free donut from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on June 6th to celebrate National Donut Day—honoring its World War I recipe used by the Salvation Army and supporting local programs with a $2 donation for each dozen donuts sold.  WBAY

CRIME NEWS

  • Jackson Vogel, a former inmate at Green Bay Correctional Institution, was found guilty of killing his cellmate in a hate crime for targeting him because he was black and gay — he will face a life sentence when he is sentenced on June 27.  WHBY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, West De Pere High School ended classes and held discussions about the use of AI tools like Chat GPT, Google Gemini and Snapchat AI in student assignments. School officials blocked Chat GPT on school devices (a measure meant to protect students’ learning skills) as teachers continue to monitor work for signs of overreliance on AI.  NBC 26

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Brown County Board approved an agreement with the C. Reiss company to relocate downtown coal piles to the Fox River Terminal—salt from the terminal will move to the site of the former Pulliam Power Plant. Under the deal, Brown County and C. Reiss must draft and sign a lease by Sept.15.  WHBY
  • Officials said today that the Fox River State Recreational Trail is being repaved from the Green Bay trailhead to Heritage Road in De Pere, with one section closed from 7 a.m. June 9 until 3 p.m. June 13 while work on other parts continues until June 20 and July 23—trail users should plan to use alternate routes.  WNCY

SPORTS NEWS

  • George Kneiser, a Wisconsin native and former UW-Green Bay golfer from Oconomowoc, survived two qualifying rounds to earn his first U.S. Open start. He will leave tonight for Pennsylvania and begin practice rounds on Sunday at Oakmont Country Club — a course known for its challenging history.  WBAY
  • Today, the Miracle League of Green Bay starts its season at Resch Miracle Field in Allouez with a record 213 players on 16 teams in a baseball league for children ages 4 to 19 with mental or physical challenges.  WBAY
