COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Packers donated $5,000 to Eisenhower Elementary’s food pantry today and provided refrigerators for Eisenhower and Beaumont to serve about 300 families while urging local businesses to support other school pantries in the district.  WBAY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local businesses are set for a boost this week with a Shinedown concert and WAMO State Dart Tournament starting Wednesday, Luke Combs concerts on Friday & Saturday at Lambeau Field, and an Epic Marathon Sunday; the events are expected to drive nearly $20 mil in impact and strain hotel supplies.  FOX 11
  • The Port of Green Bay has been closed since April 18 due to high Fox River water levels and will not reopen before May 15, costing local businesses an estimated ($15 to $20 million). Officials and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are working to restore safe navigation.  94.3 Jack FM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Green Bay School District is planning a $35 million operational referendum in November based on a February poll where 61% supported the measure and is considering a future $90 million facilities referendum. The board will poll the community again to finalize the question (warns cuts if it fails).  Green Bay Press-Gazette
  • Canvas experienced a major cyberattack on Thursday that disrupted finals and class work at UW-Green Bay and recovered by Friday morning. Shiny Hunters demanded a ransom due by today, prompting cybersecurity advice for stronger passwords and credit freezes.  WNCY
  • On May 5, UW-Green Bay research students caught an 88.58-inch lake sturgeon at the De Pere dam on the Fox River. The giant fish, the second longest ever measured, grew four inches since its 2019 capture and weighed about 250 lb (recorded May 6).  UW-Green Bay

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Plan Commission met Monday night with city officials to consider a conditional use permit that would grant the Safe Haven Hope Center a permanent spot on S. Jefferson St. Community members offered input during the meeting (the temporary permit expires June 30).  WBAY
  • A 25-member Presidential Search Committee has been formed to find a new leader for the Universities of Wisconsin after Jay Rothman was fired, and it will soon begin its review process. UW-Superior Chancellor Renée Wachter will serve as interim president starting May 18.  WTAQ
