COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wisconsin Swim Academy held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new 7,000 sqft facility — located at 2920 Riverview Drive near Howard Commons and the West Side YMCA — which will house a heated pool, Sweet Peas toddler tumbling program and multiple swim classes when it opens in fall.  WNCY
  • On Thursday afternoon, the local Disabled American Veterans chapter received a $21,112 check from a raffle at Bart Starr Plaza tailgate parties where Packers fans helped raise money. The funds will help veterans with rent, utilities and car payments.  WBAY

  • Radio personality Otis Day left 95.9 KISS FM after the station announced the change on Facebook on Thursday, Apr. 9. Eddie will serve as interim host with Katie Schurk and Nick Vitrano until further updates are provided.  FOX 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Oct. 26, 1911, President Taft arrived in Green Bay by train and 23-car motorcade and spoke at the Brown County Courthouse before moving on to Appleton; in Aug. 1934, President Roosevelt addressed over 100,000 people at Bay Beach, marking a historic moment in the region.  FOX 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today is Wear Blue Day as Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach (leading local prevention efforts) urges residents to wear blue in support of Child Abuse Prevention Month. He noted that over 70,000 abuse cases were reported in 2024 and that officials are working to protect local children.  WBAY
  • Brown County held a summit Wednesday to discuss homelessness and plan better support for unsheltered individuals + people with disabilities. County partners shared a blueprint to improve collaboration among landlords, healthcare providers, and service agencies.  94.3 Jack FM
  • Gov. Evers signed a bill today that gives UW-Green Bay’s athletic department an extra $200,000 for facility debt service, while UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee gain additional state funds + the law formalizes rules for name, image and likeness deals.  UW-Green Bay
  • The City of Green Bay and Brown County are planning a downtown library redevelopment (relocating the Aging and Disability Resource Center, Grounded Cafe, and Job Center) and converting the former Bank Mutual building into 54 parking spaces. The proposal will be discussed at the Common Council meeting on Apr. 21.  WBAY
  • The Grand Chute Police Department partnered with a community member with autism to run a mock traffic stop during Autism Acceptance Month — training officers to better use communication tools like the Wisconsin DOT invisible disability disclosure form so routine stops are less overwhelming.  WBAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced a $31 million investment in opioid settlement funds over the next two years to boost harm reduction after opioid overdose deaths fell 42.5% from 1,422 to 817 between 2023 and 2024. The program will focus on high-risk areas like Manitowoc and Outagamie counties.  WBAY
