COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wisconsin Swim Academy held a groundbreaking ceremony at its future Howard-Suamico facility on April 8 (featuring a 7,000 sqft heated pool and a 1,500 sqft toddler tumbling program) near Howard Commons. The facility will open in fall at 2920 Riverview Drive.  FOX 11
  • A Green Bay native, Amy Dill, works as NASA’s capsule communicator on the Artemis II mission, linking astronauts with Mission Control as the historic flight travels farther than past missions. She will complete her final shift before splashdown (tomorrow, April 10) after 15 years at NASA.  WBAY
  • Fox 11’s spring food drive took place until 5 p.m. yesterday in Ashwaubenon, Appleton and Oshkosh, collecting nonperishable food and household items to support programs including Paul’s Pantry, St. Joseph’s Food Program and Father Carr’s Place 2B.  FOX 11
  • Preliminary estimates released April 8 show that Brown County homelessness dropped 8% to 416 people in January, but local providers report longer shelter stays and rising needs among older adults, families and chronically homeless residents.   • Stella is recovering in Green Bay after running away, getting shot and jumping a 30-foot drop over an overpass, according to Wisconsin Humane Society.  Green Bay Press-Gazette

  • NFL fullback Alec Ingold hosted a Money Mini Camp Wednesday at Bay Port High School, offering financial guidance and career tips to students in the Howard-Suamico community. Dozens of students engaged in the session and received swag bags with copies of his book The 7 Crucibles.  WBAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Big data centers are being built in Wisconsin to support our tech boom and will use lots of water and power, raising worries among local groups and experts about straining supplies + the environment. Officials say they are reviewing plans to protect local resources.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
  • The Department of Natural Resources announced changes for the upcoming fishing season, with a statewide musky season opening May 2 and revised panfish and lake sturgeon catch-and-release rules. Local shop Swamp Donkey Bait and Tackle (in De Pere) expects strong fishing in nearby waters.  WNCY
  • Green Bay’s Cat Island has seen piping plovers nesting for 10 years since their return in 2016 — after decades away. Conservation partners are restoring beach habitat to protect the endangered birds and support their continued recovery.  WBAY
