COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Safe Haven and Cathi Oreto joined with Newcap in a tentative deal to turn a building into a homeless shelter pending city approval in Green Bay. Residents will be expected to do productive work (including fostering cats) while receiving counseling, with the lease expected to be signed soon.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
  • Newcap's interim CEO Deb Barlament announced that the nonprofit will close sometime this year amid a $2 million deficit and funding cuts. The Board and staff are working with partners (after recent cost-saving measures) to meet grant obligations and sustain vital community services.  FOX 11

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday, Mar. 16, a massive fire broke out at the 320,000 sqft Green Bay Converting warehouse on Larsen Road; CEO Jonathan Dyer said recovery plans for employees and customers are underway as firefighters controlled hot spots and investigators began probing the cause after two firefighters suffered minor injuries.  94.3 Jack FM

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Newcap no longer employs former CEO Cheryl Detrick whose last day was March 6 amid allegations of improper fund management as the nonprofit operating at a $2 million deficit plans to shut down most services after June 30.  94.3 Jack FM
  • The Packers' CEO Ed Policy is planning to raise money by holding more off-season events, raising ticket prices and seeking more sponsors (and may even sell naming rights for Lambeau Field) to keep the fan-owned team competitive with richer NFL teams.  WNCY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wed, Mar. 18, the Green Bay Packers Give Back program provided a $250,000 grant to Notre Dame Academy to fund plans for a future health and wellness center benefiting more than 730 students with expanded physical education programs + wellness initiatives. The grant supports the school’s ongoing capital campaign.  FOX 11
  • The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Nonprofit Conference will take place Thursday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oneida Casino Hotel Conference Center and is set to feature keynote speaker Deborah Biddle plus breakout sessions for nonprofit professionals — registration closes March 27.  UW-Green Bay

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During Blizzard Elsa, Brown County deputies answered 304 calls, including 193 motorist assists and 14 crashes, as snowfall ranged from 20 to 30 inches over two days. The temporary tow ban has been lifted, and officials said heavy vehicles helped reach stranded drivers (county report).  FOX 11
