A Howard man, Tyquiwon Byrd, 23, was charged with attempted first-degree homicide—one count for shooting a man during a November drug deal and one count for attacking his girlfriend’s mother with a screwdriver in February—and he was booked into Brown County Jail on March 17 with bail set at $300,000 for each charge.

Muir—a cargo schooner that sank in 1893 off Algoma—has been named a historic place by the Wisconsin Historical Society as of March 6. Maritime historians discovered the remains last year using sonar; the site is now protected under state and federal law.

At Monday night’s meeting, the school board approved a new strategic plan that sets clear goals for academics, student well-being and staff development over the next five years and confirmed the existing mission and vision statements.

It also approved a land swap agreement with the city that exchanges property near several schools — giving the board 9 months of exclusive negotiating rights on two sites and including demolition costs from a past referendum.
