CULTURE NEWS

  • Stacker has published a historical analysis of Wisconsin's biggest cities (based on the 1870 census) that shows Green Bay ranked 12th with a population of 4,666. The list offers a clear snapshot of early urban growth in the state.  WBAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin DNR reported that 375 sturgeon were speared on day two, with 300 taken in Lake Winnebago (including juvenile and adult counts) and upriver lakes reaching 90% of their cap so spearing will close today at 1 p.m.  WBAY
  • Residents driving along Highway 172 east of the Fox River have seen trees cleared at Green Isle Park and along the East River Trail in Allouez because the invasive emerald ash borer has made the trees hazardous — officials say new trees will be planted in spring.  FOX 11

SPORTS NEWS

  • Branden Ahrens passed his sturgeon spearing tradition to his sons at Lake Poygan today (one first-timer landed a 111-pound fish) as local spearers registered 175 fish Saturday and 75 Sunday, with tags allowing more spearing until 1 p.m. today.  FOX 11
