State regulators cut WPS's profit margin, so electric rate hikes will be smaller
The Daily Green Bay team
If you get your electricity from Wisconsin Public Service, your bill should climb less than the utility first asked. WPS wanted rates up 14% by 2028 and a 9.9% profit margin. The Public Service Commission cut that margin to 9.5% on Nov. 5, down from the current 9.8%.
WPS estimates smaller electric hikes than it requested
| WPS's request | Measure | WPS estimate after ruling |
|---|---|---|
| 9.6% | 2027 increase | 0.3% |
| 4.0% | 2028 increase | 2.9% |

WPS's preliminary estimates are still subject to change. The PSC's written order, expected in the next few weeks, will pin down exact numbers. The Press-Gazette reports the margin cut is expected to save ratepayers about $45.9 million over two years.
- Typical WPS bill, 2027: about $1 or less more per month
- Typical WPS bill, 2028: about $5-6 more per month
- We Energies estimate: electric rates up 3.9% in 2027, 3.5% in 2028
- PSC's written order: expected in the next few weeks
