COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The nearly 100-year-old suspension footbridge at Pamperin Park is getting a facelift as NWTC carpentry students repair the footpath and handrails using donated materials from Drexel Building Supply and Toonen Properties—efforts expected to extend the bridge’s use for the next 20 years. The bridge is closed to pedestrians Monday through Thursday for the next couple of weeks but will open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for pictures.  94.3 Jack FM

  • The U.S. Department of Education cut about $8 million from a special education teacher grant due to concerns over DEI language—Wisconsin DPI removed the disputed terms and appealed on Sept. 11, and it is now waiting for a decision.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
  • Ernie Stevens Jr., longtime Chairman of the Indian Gaming Association and Oneida Nation leader, died suddenly at 66 on September 26 (his son Brandon Yellowbird-Stevens confirmed the loss) and left a legacy of advancing tribal gaming and sovereignty during his extensive tenure.  94.3 Jack FM

HEALTH NEWS

  • In Green Bay, health experts note that colds, sinus infections, and strep throat are increasing as flu cases are expected to peak by mid-October—officials recommend vaccinations and thorough hygiene to help prevent illness. These measures include getting the flu vaccine and carefully cleaning high-touch surfaces like light switches and remote controls.  FOX 11
  • A recent Gallup poll shows that only half of Americans under 35 in Northeast Wisconsin drink, a drop from 59% two years ago and 72% two decades ago—bars are now offering more non-alcoholic mocktails as young people choose healthier lifestyles.  FOX 11

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Green Bay partnered with NeighborWorks earlier this month to unveil a Community Land Trust Initiative— a program that offers long-term land leases on purchased homes— that is expected to lower homebuyer costs. The program could ease the need for long-term housing in the community.  WBAY
