CULTURE NEWS

  • The 144-foot F.J. King, a wooden schooner that sank in Lake Michigan in 1886, was discovered off Door County using 3D imaging from 5000 diver photos—experts say the find marks a significant moment in Great Lakes exploration.  Green Bay Press-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ziah Mangin participated in UW-Green Bay's freshwater programs and will begin studying environmental sciences at UW-Madison this September after gaining field and lab work experience while monitoring freshwater sites in Brown County — a path that opens water-related opportunities in the state.  UW-Green Bay
  • Green Bay Area Public School District now requires clear backpacks for 6th-12th graders by Sept. 22—this move follows the discovery of a handgun in a student's backpack at Preble High School earlier this week. Local stores like Walmart and Meijer are working to restock clear backpacks while community members donate funds to help families buy them.  WTAQ
  • UW-Green Bay’s Rising Phoenix dual credit program got a $1 million boost from the state budget today to expand access for over 600 high school students to earn college credits—State Sen. Jamie Wall helped secure the funds to support expansion into new districts.  UW-Green Bay

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amtrak’s I-41 Thruway Bus Service between Green Bay and Milwaukee will end on October 1 due to a lack of funding in the 2025-27 biennial budget—state funds had covered the remaining costs since 2019 while tickets paid part of the fare.  WBAY
  • Budget cuts have forced the end of the Amtrak I-41 Thruway Bus Service between Green Bay and Milwaukee on Oct. 1 as the state did not provide extra funds and ticket sales did not cover rising costs—forcing the shutdown. The bus began in 2019 to link with the Hiawatha train and now leaves riders with other bus choices.  FOX 11
  • The Amtrak I-41 Thruway bus service connecting Green Bay and Milwaukee will end Oct. 1—WisDOT said rising operational costs and a lack of state funds forced the decision after the service operated since 2019.  NBC 26

HEALTH NEWS

  • Oconto County reported a nearly 70% rise in measles cases—up from 25 to 36—this week according to state figures released Friday. The outbreak began in mid-July and all cases have been among unvaccinated residents, with no deaths reported.  WNCY
