ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Klair Koenig, a 35-year-old Green Bay woman, was killed when she exited her moving vehicle near Packerland Drive and He Nis Ra Lane just before 3:00 a.m. on Sept 1—first responders tried to save her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.  WHBY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UW-Green Bay is running its SafeWalk program that makes police available 24/7 to walk with students who are alone on campus—similar services are offered at UW-Oshkosh, UW Stevens Point and UW Eau Claire.  UW-Green Bay
  • UW-Green Bay announced a new Criminal Justice major to meet the need for justice workers in our area. The program builds on a popular minor and will help students learn about law and forensic science — preparing them for roles in public safety and community service.  Green Bay News Network

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two state senators—Jamie Wall from Green Bay and Jeff Smith—asked Senate leadership on Sept. 2 to hold an expedited hearing on a bipartisan bill that would restore $1.9 million in funding to keep veterans homeless shelters open. The move comes after shelters in Bellevue and Chippewa Falls were set to close by Sept. 30, and advocates fear a similar fate for the veterans shelter in Green Bay.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
  • Green Bay held an open house Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the water utility community room to display parts of the 'Go Big Green Bay 2050 Comprehensive Plan' after 18 months of community events and hearings – public comments focused on affordable housing and better transportation options. The draft still awaits approval from the planning commission before it reaches the city council.  WBAY
  • Green Bay police remind waterfowl hunters to wear life jackets and keep 100 feet from bulkhead shorelines while hunting. The rules require hunters to stay in the water to avoid trespassing, and the season runs from Sept. 1 to Jan. 2—regulations set by local law.  WNCY
  • Green Bay Public Works said the Ray Nitschke Memorial Bridge will close from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 8 for maintenance work that shuts the crossing from North Broadway to North Washington. Previous repairs in August limited the bridge to one lane—causing delays for some drivers.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
