ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At about 6 p.m. Thursday, a basement fire at a west side home on Chantel Street displaced four residents as the Green Bay Metro Fire Department quickly extinguished the blaze—no one was injured and damage is estimated at $10,000 while the cause is under investigation.  WNCY
  • A fire broke out in the basement of a home on Chantel St. in Green Bay’s west side on Thursday, and firefighters arrived at 6 p.m. to find black smoke coming from the chimney and front door—everyone exited safely as the fire was brought under control in about 10 minutes and the cause is under investigation.  WBAY

CRIME NEWS

  • Green Bay authorities resumed cases against David and James VanderLeest for charges linked to toddler Leo Escalante’s suspicious death (David is out on bond with a trial set for Oct. 29) and (James remains in custody with a preliminary hearing on August 26).  WNCY
  • Joseph Poore was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison by Brown County court for his role in the stabbing death of Robert Marshall—killed in a drug dispute on Green Bay's east side. He pleaded no contest on June 3, 2024 and received 10 years of extended supervision while co-defendant Aaron Walton is scheduled to enter a plea on Sept. 10.  FOX 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • With less than three weeks until school starts, Northeast Wisconsin school districts are still seeking bus drivers. Companies like Lamers—serving Green Bay and nearby areas—and Kobussen need extra drivers to cover about 10 to 15 and 60 gaps respectively while offering pay in the low $20 per hour and assisting new drivers with earning a CDL to avoid extended route times.  WNCY
  • The Green Bay Area Public School District will change the school day for incoming freshmen by grouping them into small learning teams—designed to build stronger bonds with teachers—and ending open-campus lunch to help students adjust to high school. Leaders said they will track attendance and class progress to see if the new changes improve learning outcomes.  WTAQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Green Bay has published a draft of its 2050 Comprehensive Plan—updating a two-decade-old vision for the city's growth over the next 25 years—and invites residents to share feedback at an open house on Sept. 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Green Bay Water Utility; the final version will be presented to the City Council in the fall.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
