COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Consolidated Construction held its annual charity event—Consolidated for a Cause—to raise nearly $43,800 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals with contributions from 120 employees through raffles, sponsorships, and games; the funds will support three hospitals chosen based on the company’s office locations and the firm will continue the event in future years.  WBAY

CRIME NEWS

  • Dion Richardson, 18, faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide and conspiracy to commit armed robbery in connection with the Berner Street murder of Brandon Ramirez last August — his plea hearing has been rescheduled to July 14 as the defense needs more time to review evidence.  WNCY
  • Diego Ramirez, a 19-year-old missing from the area, was found Tuesday morning by Fox Crossing Police near the Racine St. off ramp from US 10 eastbound—his family confirmed his identification and investigators reported no signs of foul play.  WBAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday will begin construction of the $101 million Cofrin Technology and Education Center on the UW-Green Bay campus where First Nations members will honor the land—university leaders said the five-story facility is set to replace the old library and be finished by spring.  UW-Green Bay

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Grow Solar Green Bay — Fox Valley program was announced on May 6 to help residents, nonprofits and small businesses buy solar equipment at a below-market price through a partnership between the city and the Midwest Renewable Energy Association. City officials said the initiative supports the clean energy plan to reach 100% renewable energy by 2050 and will hold free information sessions on May 27 and June 25.  FOX 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ray Nitschke Memorial Bridge in downtown Green Bay will be closed for maintenance from 3 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 15 — detours are set on North Broadway, East Walnut Street, and North Monroe Avenue while access remains for residences and businesses.  FOX 11
  • Green Bay city leaders held a news conference and Tuesday night meeting after federal officials cut $400 million in AmeriCorps contracts, threatening to shut down the Conservation Corps that helped plant native flowers and restore habitats—officials said an emergency funding proposal could keep the 13 current members working for a short time.  WBAY
  • The Fox River locks system will open on May 17 with extended Saturday hours at Appleton lock 1—boaters will pay more for season and day passes after 10 years of no change. New portages for kayaks and canoes at Little Chute and Appleton locks will improve safety and the locks will operate on summer holidays while the Menasha lock stays closed to keep invasive species out.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
  • The Green Bay Common Council approved a new housing project Tuesday night despite more than 100 residents signing a petition against it—officials said planning will begin for a project near Algoma, Sussex, Church, and Bay Settlement roads.  WeAreGreenBay.com
