COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday morning, many community members gathered at De Pere High School for the fourth annual Redbird Ribbon Walk to raise funds for the Sting Cancer Club—an effort started in memory of teacher Jayma and aimed at helping local families dealing with cancer. The event also honored the recent loss of student Hadley Baker—drawing support from Packers receiver Christian Watson.  WeAreGreenBay.com
  • The Titletown Branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 10 in Green Bay. Letter carriers and volunteers will collect donated food along regular routes and sort items at post offices (the largest one-day nationwide food drive) to help local pantries manage summer shortages.  WeAreGreenBay.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The WHBY team celebrated winning top honors at the WBA Awards Gala in Madison—where 125 stations submitted 1,493 entries—and received awards for Election Night Coverage and Significant Community Impact as judged by professional broadcasters from outside Wisconsin.  WHBY
  • Supporters and survivors in Wisconsin marked Red Dress Day on Monday to honor missing and murdered indigenous persons and highlight the high violence rates against Native American women. Dozens met at the state capitol while the Kaukauna Public Library set up a book display and indigenous learning kits, and advocacy will continue on Saturday with a walk at the Oneida Nation civic center at 11 a.m.  WBAY

FINANCE NEWS

  • The Department of Education will resume collecting payments on federal student loans in default, affecting many borrowers in Wisconsin as campuses like UW-Green Bay finish the spring semester. Financial experts warn that missing payments may lead to wage garnishments—impacting credit scores and overall financial stability.  FOX 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Brown County Executive and Sheriff Tom Hinz died at 83 on May 3—he served nearly 50 years in public safety, including 31 years with the Green Bay Police—and he was a dedicated advocate for veterans who helped launch the Veterans Treatment Court and mentored many; local officials praised his calm presence and lasting influence while funeral arrangements are pending.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
  • Retired Brown County Sheriff and County Executive Tom Hinz died on May 3 at 82 and is remembered for his 30-year law enforcement career and work building treatment and veterans courts in the community—his calm leadership turned him into a valued mentor across Brown County. His legacy as a public servant and community advocate continues to influence local efforts in Green Bay.  FOX 11
  • Howard’s Deer Control Committee meets today at 6 p.m. and will recommend a ban on feeding deer on property and in parks to curb the growing deer population—violators would pay fines from $500 to $1,000 and the committee may also plan to adjust hunting zones.  Green Bay Press-Gazette
