  • Firefighters face extra work in cold weather as water pumps may freeze and smoke stays low. Riverside Fire District chief David Briggs said crews now rotate shifts and train on handling icy equipment (a necessary step to protect them from frostbite).  WBAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jackson Elementary School held a ribbon-cutting for its new $5,000 Hydroponic Flex Farm Tuesday. The active new system grows produce for the school's Hunger Heroes Jaguar Den (a food pantry) while teaching students about science and healthy eating.  WBAY
  • UW-Green Bay is boosting enrollment by expanding short-term certificates, ungraded courses and classes (including sessions at local nursing homes) to engage older adults.   • Brown County Public Health and Brown County Library launched a program that loans 45 digital radon testing devices from library branches in Green Bay to check for harmful radon levels.   • Wisconsin Public Service offers safety tips amid bitter cold, advising residents to open curtains for natural warmth + verify carbon monoxide detectors and properly set up space heaters to avoid gas leaks.
